This in-depth workshop will share how journalists of all experience and skill levels can use technology and applications to tell powerful data-driven stories. Data reporting and visualization are no longer just for “numbers people.” Whether you’re a data novice or expert, you’ll go back to your newsroom armed with real-world examples and strategies that you can implement immediately.

In the first half of this workshop, the University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications (which champions data journalism) will spotlight use case examples about how investigative journalists from award-winning news organizations locate, search and exploit public records as part of their reporting process. Learn about their process and techniques for uncovering and analyzing data, and see how they have presented that information to their audiences.

The second half of the workshop will be an interactive presentation focused on data visualization tools from Flourish and Canva, which have made it easier than ever to create beautiful, interactive charts, maps and more — without the need to code. Using real data sets, you’ll learn how to supercharge your reporting process and also expand the options available for telling your finished stories and reaching broader audiences. Come prepared with your laptop!

This joint workshop is brought to by the University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications and Canva.
