Jonathan Lai recently joined POLITICO as its first dedicated data and politics editor; he previously worked for the past 11 years at The Philadelphia Inquirer. As The Inquirer's Data & Democracy Reporter, he began covering voting rights and election administration in 2017 and drew national attention for his coverage of how elections are run in Pennsylvania, especially during the 2020 presidential election. He also covered related topics, such as redistricting. He created and led The Inquirer's data team in 2021 as Editor of Data-Driven Storytelling, holding dual reporter-editor roles until leaving The Inquirer this August.
